Hateful students or American Patriots?
Minority students from Trinity International University, a Christian institution, affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America, were evacuated to an undisclosed hotel Thursday night after several students received racially motivated hate mail. The FBI joined local police and campus security today to investigate.
Given the current mood in the country, the real question is why wouldn’t more minority students take shelter in more colleges?
The hateful students in the school had a lot of support when they made the decision to write those hateful threatening notes. They are only modeling their behavior against what they see in our nation’s leaders.
Threatening minorities is hardly new but there is something different about this one. There is a foul air emanating from Washington. This one has an air of Christianity and the words “officially condoned” somewhere in it.
Close investigations of political tactics used the last few years provide insights to the problem. The Republican Party has been using divisive "Christian-driven wedge" issues to secure its base. It has been a successful approach for them but there are lingering effects to their approach that has caused a major split in our country. This country has not been this polarized for many decades. It is no accident that the ruling party is so devoid of minorities. Once the minorities have been separated it is only human nature to view them as the enemy.
The total engulfment of our government by Republicans has empowered many right wing extremists to act out. Look at DeLay’s latest antics to overthrow the judiciary and he even advocated violence because he doesn’t agree with their rulings. According to his fellow Republicans he is not alone.
Bush and company has shown continued support for DeLay, but then again they are not a paragon of virtue either. The Bush administration never admits doing anything wrong regardless of contrary information from investigations and reams of reports they are presented with. There is no accountability and the buck never stops at this president’s desk for anything. As for the process of “Checks and Balances” it has become a quaint idea reminiscent of people in powdered wigs. tri-cornered hats and buckled shoes.
As devote Christians aren’t these hate-letter-writing students part of the morally superior elite that has taken over the major branches of Government. Hasn’t the major media been cowed to feed from it’s teat?
These students behavior has also been reinforced by media personalities such as Limbaugh, Hannity, and O’Reilley. These kids have been told over and over that it is ok to hate others and that it is even patriotic to do so.
Next we’ll have people draping themselves in the American flag as they chase minorities all over the countryside. Ooops …too late it’s already happening in Arizona and the flag-draped “patriots” are calling themselves the “Minutemen.”
Minute Men are going to have to train for this job somehow. Maybe they can add an event at the rodeo.
Picture this! A red white and blue F-150 pickup in the rodeo ring with two American flags fluttering from fiberglass poles on each side of the cab, “Save our Troop” ribbons and “Jesus Saves” decals on the back window, racing around the dust after some young Mexican as he tries avoid being roped by a wrangler standing in the truck bed.
If the immigrant can avoid getting roped all afternoon he can win his freedom by getting inducted into the armed services. Everybody wins. The immigrants can serve the country they want to get into. The Minutemen get some good practice. Captured immigrant women can work in the kitchen making tortillas and burritos for the folks in the stands.
It can be set up like a roman coliseum and modified for the American southwest; it can be called “Mexican roundup” or “Alamo’s Armageddon” or “The Freedom Ring”, maybe just call it “The Tucson-Two-Step.” Homeland Security could fund the event and Fox could televise it.
Little cowboys can participate too. For a pre-show the little buckaroos could use small ATV’s to rope Mexican kids. It’ll be great!
Ok, it’s a stretch, but so was the idea of “patriotic” vigilantes herding Mexicans in the desert.
With all these potentially great things in the future why shouldn’t white students send hate letters to minorities? Why shouldn’t DeLay continue with his righteous wrath? Why shouldn’t Christians continue their support for Republicans that hijacked their religion like the Taliban hijacked Islam?
Which scenario is more farfetched: Christians taking back their religion or fresh burritos at a dusty stadium?
Do I hear a Yeeehaaa!
