News of Note

Secret out on Iraq but does anyone care anymore? A secret memo was uncovered recently that proves Bush and Blair used fake information to justify the removal of Saddam.

It says " It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided. But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran. We should work up a plan for an ultimatum to Saddam to allow back in the UN weapons inspectors. This would also help with the legal justification for the use of force.

The Attorney-General said that the desire for regime change was not a legal base for military action. There were three possible legal bases: self-defence, humanitarian intervention, or UNSC authorisation. The first and second could not be the base in this case. Relying on UNSCR 1205 of three years ago would be difficult. The situation might of course change." SECRET AND STRICTLY PERSONAL - UK EYES ONLY

The U.S. and Russia criticized by the UN.
"We are greatly disappointed" by "unsatisfactory progress" toward disarmament by the big powers, said New Zealand's Marian Hobbs.
The U.S. representative rejected the criticism and tried to turn the discussion around to Iran and North Korea. Annan said all nations must work toward "a world of reduced nuclear threat and, ultimately, a world free of nuclear weapons."
Under the 2002 Moscow Treaty, the United States and Russia are to cut back their deployed warheads to between 1,700 and 2,200 each, by 2012.

Why is the United States giving haven to a known terrorist?
Luis Posada Carriles has been on the run since he blew up an airline in Barbados on October 1976 killing more than 70 people. The morality of Bush's administration is once more in question. Is the U.S. war on terror only lip service? Is it a convenient bit of dialog for imposing its will on others?
